In the early 1800s Kedron was known as Luke Settlements. The Luke family were among the first settlers in this area. One branch of the family had seven sons and they each owned farms in the area. They also operated a saw mill along the Oshawa Creek. Most of the first Kedron settlers immigrated here from England. For the most part they were farmers by trade and deeply religious. Their faith and their experiencing toiling the land would serve them well in their harsh new surroundings as they built log cabins and cleared the forest for farming.
The church was a focal point of the community from the beginning. In 1863 when the third Kedron church was built it was given the name Kedron Church as members of the congregation made reference to a nearby brook and the surrounding valley that they equated with the Kidron referenced in the bible. Soon the entire community would adopt the Kedron name albeit with an “E” instead of an “I” which appears to be a derivative spelling of the intended name.
